Good piece, Katya! I can relate to this a lot, especially the roguelike/deckbuilder and most recently extraction descriptors. Instant eye-roll.

Extraction shooters are another one I don't want to be blessed with, haha

Thank you Gonçalo! (Please, call me Katya, not Kat)

Fixed, sorry about that! I have a close friend named Catia (Portuguese spelling) and I am so used to calling her Cat that it just came out automatically 😅

No worries at all! Also, what a cool way to spell the name, I love it 🙌

More articles like this please! As someone in the games marketing space it's very interesting (and informative) to hear from someone on the other side of the table.

You got it! I'm glad it was informative, hopefully I'll have more to say on the subject!

Are we best friends now?

Hey, thanks for doing such an awesome job!

Hi all, co-founder of PressEngine here - firstly, thanks for writing this article - I've posted the URL around the team and they've all loved reading it!

My main reason for commenting was that I wanted to say that you can tailor your profile on the platform so that you only receive PR comms from us that match the platforms (Xbox, Nintendo, PS etc.) and genres of games you're interested in.

One of the key drivers when building the platform was to give power back to journalists, and help reduce the noise in your inboxes, and we're always looking for suggestions on how we can improve and enhance our filtering so if you've got any ideas please let me know.

If it's okay, I'm going to pass this article onto the Offbeat / Pantaloon team who crafted the email. It was a great bit of PR!

Hey Phil, appreciate you being here and commenting! I actually really, really like PressEngine and have made use of the tailoring of genres platforms in my profile—and clearly, it worked since the Offbeat comm landed in my inbox 🙌

There is still going to be a lot of irrelevant releases despite narrowing it all down, but being ultra-specific may filter out titles that may be of interest. Receiving more is the price we pay for finding a gem, I suppose. That said, I'd love to see the ability to subscribe to specific publishers, for example, or building a list of studios even.

This is a world i had no clue about and now I know I’m not missing anything

Indeed. The more comments I read, the more second-hand embarrassment I get 😅 Maybe some things will change in future though!

Katya. Read my mind. I’m on Press Engine, out myself there out of curiosity… kinda regretting it.

My main income is from PR (in tech) and I’m surprised how little I’m properly pitched. Just spammed like it’s going out of style.

And by properly, I mean, sent a targeted email that offers something of value deducted by something I may actually write.

It’s just trailer and launch release spam. If someone just emailed in and said: “Hey, I’m from Aus (or NZ) and I’m doing something cool nobody else has done because of X” I’d be immediately more interested.

It’s happened twice in three years. Anyway… off my soapbox I go, was just triggered by this.

I'm sorry for triggering you! You're completely right, trailer and launch release spam is 99% of it, and it's a real shame. This is why what I got today about Offbeat caught my eye, even though it still follows the formula. I can't blame the agencies fully for this; I do wish developers pitched me directly though. For sure.

Haha it’s a good trigger! The kind that makes me want to comment and share! Haha.

Then it was worth it haha

Offbeat's PR did bonus work via that email, because I also immediately added it to my wishlist.

You might shy away from rhythm and Tycoon games, but I love them, and am curious to see how mashing them together works.

Thanks for sharing 😁

That was part of my intention, honestly, I wanted to share this cool press release that impressed me but figured I'd add some context around it... and here we are 😁
